Average vs. median: the number behind "typical"
A few very strong units can pull an average far from what most units report.
When a franchisor reports a performance figure, it often says which statistic it is: average (mean), median, or a range from lowest to highest.
The difference
The average adds every value and divides by how many there are. A handful of exceptional locations can lift it a lot.
The median is the middle value: half the units reported more and half reported less. It is less affected by outliers.
Why it matters
If the average is well above the median, the results are probably skewed by a few high performers. If the source reports how many units met or exceeded the average, that count is worth reading.
Our labels
We always state which statistic a figure is. We don't convert an average into a median or estimate one from the other, because that would be our guess, not the source.
